Open source Publishing Workshops

This workshop is a practical escape route for designers and publishers from the trap of commercial publishing software.

The course runs on two consecutive Thursdays - the 22nd and 29th November. Please ensure you are available for both before booking your place.

What we make is often defined by what tools we can use to make it. This workshop gives designers and publishers a hands-on introduction to the tools and technologies of Open Source publishing.

We will look at three key tools: ‘The Gimp’ (an open source bitmap graphics tool, like Adobe Photoshop), ‘Inkscape’ (an open source vector illustration tool, like Adobe Illustrator), and Scribus — an open source layout tool like Quark Express or Adobe InDesign.

But besides specific tools, this workshop moves beyond outmoded boundaries in the publishing process between writing, designing, and printing: between the page and the ‘Net.

Attendees will learn the basics, and have an introduction to the techniques and possibilities of integrating workflows between web, design and print. There will also be an in-depth look at the economics and practicalities of ‘Print on Demand’ and other aspects of the future of publishing.

These workshops will be run by Simon Worthington and Laura Oldenbourg of Mute Magazine and Openmute.Duration : 0:7:28

Advertising Design & Print at Texas State Technical College

www.tstc.edu
Graphic methods of advertising and the visual power to convince an audience to take action are essential in today’s society. Whether in billboard designs, brochures, point-of-purchase literature, logo designs, packaging displays or other visual communications, the graphic artist must blend the gift of creativity with technical skills to produce messages that sizzle, and messages that people remember. If a career as a graphic artist is your dream, we can help you make it reality.

Texas State Technical College’s Advertising Design & Print (ADP) program emphasizes the technical and practical aspects of preparing camera-ready art for reproduction.

ADP faculty members offer industry experience and expertise as professional commercial artists so you can gain real experience through projects as you build your portfolio—the artist’s resume. You can also develop your skills in two computer laboratories with Macintosh and PC courses to learn today’s electronic illustration and design programs.

As a student in the ADP program at TSTC, you can develop skills in the reproduction of graphic art with emphasis on the creation, production and presentation of visual sales messages. This includes learning techniques in design, computer art, composition and illustration. Students can learn to adapt these techniques to fulfill the requirements of multicolored printing and become knowledgeable in advertising, merchandising and salesmanship.

As a graduate of the program, you may qualify for positions such as staff artist, layout and composition specialist, designer, production artist, advertising artist or advertising designer. Successful graduates have the flexibility to move into different areas of advertising, with a working knowledge of the field’s diversity. Job responsibilities often include designing and laying out advertisements for publication. The commercial artist must know a variety of computer programs, including the many Adobe programs, QuarkXPress and others. Artists may also hold responsibility for research, design, concept production, ad building and development.

Printing Specialization

As computer innovations continue to radically move the printing industry in digital directions, the roles of commercial artists and printing technicians are merging. Because of these changes, Texas State Technical College in Waco designed the Printing Specialization to prepare individuals for the printing careers of today and the future.

As one of the largest manufacturing industries in the United States - employing over 1,173,000 people in more than 50,000 establishments, and selling over $155 billion of products, the printing industry offers virtually unlimited career opportunities.

In the Printing Specialization program, offered by TSTC’s Advertising Design & Print Technology, you can develop the comprehensive skills and knowledge sought by top organizations in today’s printing industry. TSTC instructors are experienced professionals who guide students through classroom instruction, reinforced by extensive hands-on laboratory experiences. You can gain a strong education in all phases of process color, pre-press, press, bindery and estimating. You can learn complex skills such as page design, color scanning, image manipulation and Web page design.

Graduates of the TSTC Printing program will enter an exciting industry that uses innovative processes such as Computer-to-Plate workflow, Direct Digital Color Proofing and digital asset management.Duration : 0:5:10
